Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
From the car park, follow the Kahikatea Track, climbing a gully and zig-zagging through lush native bush. After about 600 m, the track crosses a short boardwalk over the roots of a towering kahikatea tree that stands 39.4 m tall and is estimated to be around 400 years old. Along the way, you’ll also encounter impressive mataī and pukatea specimens. At 305 m elevation, Kahikatea Track meets Kānuka Track. From here, you can turn left onto Kānuka Track, which sidles the hillside before intersecting Tawa Track and connecting to Mahoe Track further on. To reach Grampians Saddle or the summit, follow either Tawa Track or Mahoe Track. Return down the Mahoe Track. Dogs are allowed on the Grampians but please keep on a lead when stock animals are within the Reserve. Stock grazing helps to control weeds and reduce fire risk. Take warm clothing, sun protection and some water as there isn't any available on the track. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there.
Dogs are allowed on a lead.
