Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Walking through native bush to the main ridge , the Howard Road Track is a steep walk leading to panoramic views over the Wellington Harbour . Along the way two lookout points provide plenty of opportunities to stop and take a break whilst enjoying the view. The first lookout point is just 500m from the bottom of the track, and only 10m off the main track. The second is located just 100m from the top of the track and is just a short walk along a flat section. At the top of the trail you can return along the same route or continue along Mount Lowry Track. You can also make a loop by including Cheviot Road Track and Ngaumatau Road.
The trail starts at the end of Howard Road, next to two large water tanks. It ends at the intersection with Mount Lowry, 600m from Wainuiomata Road. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there. There are regular bus and ferry services to Eastbourne and the surrounding areas.
