Track description This short trail is located in the Bay of Plenty. For the day hike in Otago, see Isthmus Peak Track . From Rātapu Bay on Lake Tarawera, the track goes right along the base of Mount Tarawera. It goes through to Lake Rotomanhana, but can also be done in the reverse direction. Lake Rotomahana was the lake where the Pink and White Terraces were until the Mount Tarawera eruption of 1886. There is a memorial to this eruption on the track. It’s a very short track, with about 30m of altitude change. However, it is a bit challenging, so consider wearing hiking shoes or boots for this one. It goes through a forest. You’ll see lots of beautiful cliffs, steaming geothermal features and some rare plants. This is a hike that’s only accessed by boat. For that reason, you’re not likely to have many others sharing the track with you. If you’re tempted to swim in the area, don’t immerse your head. There are harmful bacteria in the water. Toilets are located at the nearby DOC campground at Hot Water Beach on Lake Tarawera. No dogs allowed. Getting there You’ll need a boat to access this track. There are two main points where you can begin from. The south-eastern side of Rātapu Bay. A jetty on the northern side of Lake Rotomahana. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
