Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
The Wilkinson Track extends from the north side of the Rangatira Loop Track to Tuteremoana, the peak of Kāpiti Island. It involves a 500-metre climb through regenerating forest, covering a distance of 3.8 km. The track includes several zig-zags to reduce steepness, making it longer than the alternative Trig Track for the first 400 metres of the climb, but not as steep. Additionally, it is maintained to a higher standard, making it more suitable for wet conditions. It takes about 90 minutes to reach the intersection with the Trig Track, and approximately 15 minutes to reach the peak from there. Around one-third of the way up, there is a picnic area and a hīhī feeder, which is worth a visit if time allows, or as a destination for those with less fitness. Lower down, there are also clearings in the forest offering views back to Kāpiti Coast. As the ascent progresses, the forest transforms into a lush rainforest, abundant with lichens, moss, and epiphytes. For those with reasonable fitness, it is recommended to hike up the Trig Track and descend via the Wilkinson Track. Please note that hiking down the Trig track is not permitted.
