Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Kōwhai Street Track to Butterfly Creek is a well-maintained wide track that boasts stunning views across Eastbourne and Wellington Harbour on the initial climb up, and then beautiful native bush on the descent to Butterfly Creek. Allow about 1hr to reach Butterfly Creek, and extra time to enjoy the picnic area which has numerous picnic tables overlooking the creek area. There is also a toilet at Butterfly Creek.
The track starts at the end of Kōwhai Street, Eastbourne. There are regular bus and ferry services to Eastbourne and the surrounding areas . Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there. There is very limited parking on upper Kōwhai Street, we recommend you park lower down, close to Muritai Road.
