Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
This track is 3.1km one way, so allow 3-4 hours return. The walk to Lake Marian starts with crossing a swing bridge over the Hollyford River. After about 10 minutes walking there is a wooden viewing platform with fantastic views over the Marian Falls – see Marian Falls track for more details. Beyond the boardwalk the track continues up to Lake Marian and the track from here gets muddy and after wet weather there can be a lot of water on the track. The track also gets steep in places with a couple of spots where you will need to ascend and descend using your hands on rocks/tree roots. The track in places is rocky and uneven. Just before the lake the track starts to flatten out and there is a toilet at the saddle just before you descend a few minutes to the lake. Lake Marian is often a beautiful turquoise colour and is a great spot for a picnic lunch and photos. The lake is in a cirque surrounded by the Darren Mountains so on a good day there are fantastic views of the lake with all the peaks in the background.
There is about 400m in elevation from the carpark to Lake Marian so you will need a good fitness level and experience tramping as the track is steep and rocky in places. This track is best done on a good day. In winter and spring do not walk further around the lake edge as there are avalanche paths along here. Dogs are not permitted in Fiordland National Park Bikes not allowed Not suitable for wheelchairs and buggies There is a long drop toilet at the car park and also near Lake Marian.
The Marian Falls Carpark is about 1km down the Hollyford Road. From Te Anau take the Milford Road (SH 94) past the Divide and turn off at the Lower Hollyford Rd junction. The Marian Carpark is about 1 km down this road with car parks on both the left and right. The distance from Te Anau is 87km and allow an hour ten minutes for driving to the start of the track. The Hollyford road is sealed to the Marian Carpark. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
