Track Description A lovely way to break up the drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound is to stop and do this short walk. It’s suitable for children and all fitness types. The good quality track is flat, and well gravelled. This is in a wetland area and the walk has lots of ferns. The birdlife is abundant, but the sandflies are also, so take insect repellent. The walk takes you to a lookout that’s up on a knoll above the lake. Here there’s a picnic table where you can stop and enjoy the beautiful views. Wheelchairs and buggies could make it to the lake, but wouldn’t be able to continue after that. The track goes on through a beech forest, which is still flat, but has some bumps on it. Part of the track is on a boardwalk. Further on there’s a bridge to cross and also some seating where you can appreciate the lake from another viewpoint. The track then continues to loop around to the carpark. Toilets are 3 minutes down the road (in the Te Anau direction) at Henry Creek. Getting There The track is located in Te Anau Downs. It’s about half an hour from Te Anau township. Look out for it on your right. There’s plenty of parking in the carpark, but there’s nowhere to park where the track comes out on the road at the northern end. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
