Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Track Description This is an easy loop around a freshwater lake - one of New Zealand’s few dune lakes. The track is flat and wide and suitable for all fitness types. Part of the walk is through native bush, especial mānuka, however a large portion of the track is along exposed grassland. Take a water bottle and sun protection in summer and take an extra layer in winter. The path is generally well maintained but there are parts that require a bit of navigation and careful footing. Views of the lake come and go, but you’ll also see the adjacent farmland. You’re also likely to see some native birds. This is a good walk to do to break up the long drive to Cape Reinga. Most people take about an hour to an hour and a half to complete the loop. Benches are placed along the path so you can stop and admire the view. The lake is a popular recreational spot for locals and has hosted Waka Ama championships. Toilets are located at the carpark at the northern end. Getting There The lake is 20 minutes From Kaitaia. Follow State Highway 1 for about 10 minutes, then turn left on West Coast Road. Turn off at Sweetwater Road until the carpark. There are various entry points and carparks at the lake with the largest one at the southern end. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
