Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
This loop walk begins at the Ngaumatau Road entrance and follows the Cheviot Track up through regenerating bush to reach the Main Ridge. From here, follow Main Ridge until the Kaitawa Road Track, which descends steeply into York Bay. Return along the foreshore before climbing back up the Ngaumatau Track to complete the circuit. The ascent is on a good track, but once on the ridge the route narrows and becomes more challenging. Expect overgrown sections, steep climbs, and rough footing with large tree roots cutting across the trail. Good footwear is essential, as the descent in particular can be tricky. Although demanding in places, the bush is beautiful throughout, offering a mix of shaded gullies and exposed ridgelines. There is one especially rewarding lookout point with sweeping views across Wellington Harbour and the Hutt Valley. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there.
