Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Beginning from the North Egmont Visitor Centre, take the North Egmont Summit Track, which is a wide gravel track. After 60-90 minutes, the track reaches a signposted junction, where a wooden seat provides excellent views of the mountain. From there, the track descends through stunted forest to Maketawa Hut. The following day, take the Maketawa Track through mossy goblin forest, tackling a few steep stairs and ladders.
Be prepared for changeable weather Weather on the mountain changes rapidly – you must be well prepared with suitable clothing and equipment for all weather and conditions.
