Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
The track begins at the end of Mangorei Road, New Plymouth. From the car park, follow the path back up to Mangorei Road and walk to the road end. Then follow the track signage up a driveway and into the bush. The track climbs steadily up many steps to Pouākai Hut. Walk five minutes past the hut for great views down over Ahukawakawa Swamp. From here turn left at the track junction to access the Pouākai Tarns (pools) – a further 10-minute walk along the Pouākai Track. This is a good day tramp, or you can stay overnight at Pouākai Hut, bookings required all year round.
Be ready for any weather by packing a waterproof jacket and plenty of warm layers. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes (tramping boots are recommended) and bring a headtorch, as the bush gets dark quickly in the evening.
Pouākai Hut is situated at the top of the track. This is Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki ’s most popular hut, and therefore bookings are required all year round. The hut also has a deck and toilets available for day visitors.
The track begins at the car park at the end of Mangorei Road, around 20 minutes’ drive from New Plymouth. Follow SH3 south from New Plymouth (towards Inglewood and Whanganui). Turn right onto Mangorei Road, then follow the road for 13.6 km. Turn into the car park on the right, just before the road end. The car park can fill up quickly, so either plan to get there early, or be prepared to wait for a spot to become available. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.

Taranaki can be a very windy spot; this is more likely as you gain elevation. Passing frontal systems can drop a lot of rain on the mountain in a short period. Low cloud can cause disorientation, especially above the bushline. You must be well prepared with suitable clothing and equipment for all weather and conditions. Sections of this track can become impassable in winter conditions due to snow and ice. Check with North Taranaki Visitor Centre for up-to-date track conditions.
No dogs.
Track information, access and weather can change. Confirm current alerts and land-manager information close to departure, tell someone your plans, and carry equipment appropriate for the route and conditions.
