Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Track Description This is a lovely short walk, steeped in history. Zigzag your way from the carpark, past information panels to an orchard area, before making your way to the beach. Enjoy the wide views of the Bay of Islands. This area was the site of the Rangipoua Pā. Here also, the first Christian sermon to be preached in New Zealand occurred. It was given by Samuel Marsden on Christmas Day in 1814. A large cross commemorates the occasion. Take time to enjoy the wildlife on the rocky beach. The track is well-kept, but it is steep going back up the hill. Parts of the track are exposed, so take sun protection and an extra layer. Not all cell providers have coverage over this area. Getting There It’s a 40-minute drive from Kerikeri to the carpark. There’s plenty of parking space at the carpark and toilets are located here too. Use this location in Google maps to find your way there. Helpful resources Find tips, guides and how-to videos to help you prepare for your walk at mountainsafety.org.nz
