The Mitre Peak Track to Pukeamoamo / Mitre, the highest point in the Tararua Ranges starts a few minutes downstream of Mitre Flats Hut , t hen rises steeply to a terrace, which it traces for a kilometre. It’s a stiff climb before breaking through the bush at about 1,000m. This is a rugged backcountry route, requiring scrambles over tree roots and fallen branches. Beyond the bush line, there is no marked DOC route. Conditions above can be severe, with strong winds, freezing temperatures, and low visibility. Alpine travel beyond this point requires favorable weather, off-track navigation skills, and appropriate equipment. The track follows a cairned route over gravel slopes, heading ever upwards towards Pukeamoamo / Mitre.
The track begins from Mitre Flats Hut . The most direct route is via the Mitre Flats Track (Barra Track) .
