The Mokopuna track is designed for both easy walking and biking and is well-suited for families to take their children learning how to ride ‘balance bikes’ while their parents walk or run beside them. It’s equally great as a buggy-walk or easy trail run as there are no steep hills or sharp corners like many of the other tracks in the Redwoods. The visitor information centre provides a large overview map showing trails within the forest. While there are several entries and exits, the trail is clearly marked. The Mokopuna trail is under the shelter of the redwood forest and is a predominantly flat, compacted dirt track which is sometimes covered in Redwood leaves. Be ware that there are some exposed roots, rocks and ruts and the track is undulating with a slight gradient.
Pinch Points: The Mokopuna is a consistently 1.5m+ wide trail. While the path narrows around trees and roots, it's never less than 1m wide. Safety: The Mokopuna is a shared walking and cycling track. Because it is a low-grade cycling track compared to others in the area, cyclists are usually families moving slowly. Some exposed roots are large enough to be a trip hazard. Turning Radius: Most corners have wide turning radiuses of 6m+ Steps: There are no steps on the Mokopuna trail. Seats: There are no seats along the Mokopuna trail. ----- See more accessibility information and photos on Accessibel A video ride through of this trail is available at AdaptMTB . The trail has been assessed as Adaptive Mountain Biking Grade 1
Due to the high volumes of visitors, Whakarewarewa Forest is surrounded by parking. The main entrance to The Redwoods is via Titokorangi Drive , where the car park provides one designated mobility park outside the Tree Walk and another two opposite the Information Centre. Parking extends to the end of Titokorangi Drive. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
