Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
From Mair Park, follow the Hātea Walkway 300 metres north to the start of the Hokianga/Dobbie Track. The track climbs steadily through a bush-filled valley and passes a grove of very large kauri. The surface is metalled, steep in places, and includes many steps, so moderate fitness and sturdy footwear are needed. From the summit, enjoy spectacular views over the city and harbour. You can return the same way, link back to your starting point via the Mount Parihaka via Drummond Track , or take the longer Mount Parihaka via Ross Track which finishes on Dundas Road which takes you to Riverside Drive to connect with the Hātea River Walkway to return to your start point.
No dogs are allowed on any of the tracks to the summit. Dogs may be walked on leash on the Hātea River Walkway, which crosses through the reserve.
When visiting areas with healthy kauri trees, please make sure you follow these steps: Clean your footwear, tyres and equipment before and after visiting our kauri forests. If you are walking your dog, you should also make sure you clean their paws. Use cleaning stations every time you pass one while you are walking in a park. Stay on the tracks and keep off kauri roots. Stay away from closed tracks. Don't remove soil from, or bring soil into, areas with kauri trees.
Park at Mair Park off Rurumoki Street. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
