Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
From the visitor centre, follow the boardwalk past the Camphouse to the Summit Track. The Ngatoro Loop Track begins 400 metres along this route. The track is steep in places and has some large steps. The track descends into a valley through a 'goblin forest,' where ferns and moss drape over twisted tree trunks. After crossing a small unbridged stream (usually dry, but may become impassable after heavy rain), the trail climbs back up via a series of steps, leading you back to the visitor centre.
The track starts at the North Egmont Visitor Centre. To get there, head 13 km south from New Plymouth to Egmont Village. Turn off SH3 on to Egmont Road and follow it for 16 km to the end. The visitor centre is signposted from the junction. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
