Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
The track to Cattle Ridge begins at Roaring Stag Hut which you can reach by the Roaring Stag Track . Fill your water bottle, then cross the suspension bridge over the Ruamahanga River and follow the track across the forested river terrace. From here, the track climbs steeply all the way to Cattle Ridge. The climb gains 500m to the leatherwood zone, with the hut sitting another 200m higher. Unlike the Roaring Stag Track, this route is steep and rough, typical of the Tararua Ranges. The entire climb is demanding, requiring scrambling over tree roots. It is a tiring ascent with slippery sections, so take your time and go carefully. Some trampers may take longer than two hours, so plan extra time and carry plenty of water, as there are no sources along the way. Shortly before reaching Cattle Ridge Hut , the track emerges from the bush into low alpine scrub. Just over a spur, the hut appears above, about five minutes away. Sitting atop the ridge, it offers spectacular views across the northern Wairarapa.
Although the track is only 2.05 km long, the steep climb, rough terrain, and significant elevation gain make it challenging. Allow plenty of time, as it may take longer than expected. The Tararua tops are famous for their wild, fast-changing, and unpredictable weather. Whenever you head into the Tararua Forest Park, be sure to pack warm and waterproof clothing, even if the forecast is clear. It's also essential to carry a distress beacon and an emergency shelter.
