Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
This track offers varied terrain, following an old pioneer route for 45 minutes to reach the Smoothwater River. Continue down the clear riverbed for about 40 minutes to reach the secluded Smoothwater Bay. Return via the same route; do not attempt to return to Jackson Bay via the coastline as it is very rugged and dangerous . Avoid this track during or after heavy rain as the river can flood. Sturdy footwear is recommended. Dogs are allowed with a permit from the DOC Awarua/Haast Visitor Centre. For experienced trampers, this track also marks the start of the Stafford Bay Route . The track starts from the Smoothwater Bay Track sign, just before Jackson Bay. A roadside carpark is available for bikes, cars and campervans. Use this link on Google Maps to help find your way there.
Dogs with a DOC permit only. Contact closest DOC office to get a permit.
