Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Follow the red markers along the coast from the carpark. At high tide the Tāpapakanga Stream, which flows around the impressive Māori pā, can be difficult to cross. An alternative route heads inland past the pā and then re-joins the track at the top of Deerys Road. Just past the Ashby Cemetery, enter the track through the pedestrian gate. From here the track will take you through mature and regenerating coastal bush with impressive views across Tikapa Moana. At the Waikaha Stream Kayak Campground, there is a beautiful stand of Tairere, along with a compost toilet nearby. The track then ascends up to the trig site before following the ridgeline. After following the ridge for a short time, descend back down to the top of Deerys Road. Return to the beach front car park via the pa site.

Stay on the tracks and keep off kauri roots. Stay away from closed tracks. Don't remove soil from, or bring soil into, areas with kauri trees.
