Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Time (one way): 1 hr 30 min walk Distance: 4.6 km This track can be accessed from either the Urchin Campsite off Kaimanawa Road or from Tree Trunk Gorge Road. Either way it is generally well graded as it follows the line of an old road associated with the Tongariro Power Scheme. Red beech surrounds the track for most of the way but close to the Tree Trunk Gorge end an open ridge provides good views out to Tongariro National Park. This is a tramping track: there are several small streams to cross, and one larger one 15 minutes from the southern exit/entrance. Most are fairly easy to negotiate unless there has been recent heavy rain.
You can ride Tree Trunk Gorge as a point-to-point adventure if you've prearranged a shuttle, or as a round trip. The trail takes you through beautiful North Island beech forest, across streams and rivers, and over two impressive gorges along the upper Tongariro River . It's a grade 4 trail, perfect for experienced riders and intermediates seeking a fun challenge. Starting from the northern end, the trail begins with a challenging 1 km climb before leveling out, revealing beautiful river fords and wooden bridges. The last part of the trail features a steep technical descent followed by a challenging climb. It's best enjoyed in fair weather, as the river crossings can be quite cold in winter. Check out Love Taupō for a video of the track. These are shared-use tracks. Follow the mountain bikers code: respect others, respect the rules, respect the track.
The trail is located within the Kaimanawa Forest Park, just an hour’s drive south of Taupo and 15 minutes south of Turangi. It is easily accessed via Kaimanawa Road, just off State Highway 1. Car parking is available at the northern end of the trail, at The Pillars of Hercules; or at the southern end, off Tree Trunk Gorge Road. Alternatively, there are shuttle services available from either Taupō or Turangi. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there.
