Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Umukarikari Track begins with a steady climb through beech forest to the treeline. From there it heads across the alpine tops of the Umukarikari Range, following a poled route. Enjoy spectacular views across the Kaimanawa Forest Park, Lake Taupō and the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park. The route travels over Sharp Cone (1481 m) and Umukarikari summit (1561 m). From the summit, the route follows a long, open ridge. At the end of the ridge, the track drops down into the Waipahiki Valley. Before reaching the hut, the track crosses the unbridged Waipakihi River. This may not be safe during or following heavy rain. After crossing, a short track leads up to Waipakihi Hut . The hut is popular with hunters and trampers. It has excellent views of the river valley and the Kaimanawa tops.
There are no water sources on the track, we advise carrying 2-3L per person. The weather in Kaimanawa Forest Park is extremely changeable. Be prepared for cold wet conditions even in summer. Carry a waterproof jacket, warm clothing, a fully charged mobile phone and a distress beacon, lots of food and water, emergency shelter, hat and gloves, even if done as a day walk. Access to the hut requires crossing the upbridged Waipakihi River. This may not be passable after heavy rain.
Before, or after the tramp, there are two campsites which are accessible by road. Waikoko Campsite is at the Umikarikari end on Kaimanawa Road, and Urchin Campsite is along the road towards Mt Urchin Track. This tramp takes you to Waipakihi Hut , a 12-bunk hut across the Waipakihi River.
The gravel road leading to the track can be rough in wet conditions, but is navigable for most cars. From Tūrangi, follow SH1 south for 15 km, then turn off onto Kaimanawa Rd. Follow Kaimanawa road, continuing straight past the turnoff to Urchin Campsite Rd. Soon afterwards, turn left to the Waikoko Campsite. As the track start is not in Google Maps currently, use the location of Waikoko Campsite , and then follow the remaining directions as follows: From the campsite, continue uphill past the campsite before taking the first right. Follow this for 1 km to end of the road where you'll see signs for the track.
