Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
From Waiorongomai Saddle (after coming up the Te Aroha Summit Track or the High-Level Pack Track ), follow the Waipapa Track northeast along the ridge. The track then curves southeast, passing Pukekohatu (799 m). At the next junction, follow the signposted Waipapa Track down into the Waitawheta Valley. The track descends off the ridge and sidles around the headwaters of Waipapa Stream, then gently drops into the valley floor, arriving at Waitawheta Hut. This popular hut sits in a grassy clearing beside the Waitawheta River, on the site of the original cookhouse from the kauri logging era. A 10 minute walk from the hut leads to a replica sawmill, identical to those used during the region’s sawmilling days.
You need good fitness for this track. It is steep and the terrain is best suited for experienced trampers. The track is rough, so wear comfortable hiking boots/shoes with good grip and ankle support. There are unbridged stream crossings on this track. They are normally small and safe to cross, but they can flood after heavy rain and become dangerous. Assess them carefully before crossing and if in doubt, stay out.
