Vehicle licence versus registration
Registration adds a vehicle to the Motor Vehicle Register. The regularly renewed vehicle licence is commonly called rego, so the result needs to label the returned status and date precisely.
WOF or COF status
The result is intended to show available Warrant of Fitness or Certificate of Fitness details according to the vehicle record. Missing data will not be presented as a current inspection.
Road user charges
Where returned and relevant, the lookup will identify available RUC information separately from the cost estimate provided by the KiwiTools RUC calculator.
Rego, WOF and RUC check by number plate
A combined plate lookup can help a driver or used-car buyer notice expired or approaching vehicle-licence and inspection dates without confusing those records with one another. The future result will display the source and checked time beside the matched vehicle.
A valid-looking status does not establish ownership, prove the plate belongs on that vehicle or replace a mechanical inspection. Check the VIN or chassis identifier and complete separate purchase-history and security-interest checks where required.

Compare the returned vehicle identity with the physical vehicle and VIN.
Treat unavailable or old data as unknown rather than passed or current.
Check expiry dates against the date and time the source was retrieved.

Can I check an NZ vehicle by number plate here?
The complete lookup page is available, but live vehicle-data results are not connected yet. Entering a plate and pressing the button currently shows a development notice without sending or storing the plate.
What will the rego, WOF and RUC check show?
Subject to authorised data access, the future result is intended to show matched vehicle identity, available licence or rego status, WOF or COF information and applicable RUC details with a source timestamp.
Are registration and vehicle licensing the same thing?
They are related but different concepts. A vehicle is registered when it is added to the Motor Vehicle Register, while the vehicle licence is the regularly renewed licence commonly called rego.
Does every vehicle need a WOF and RUC?
No. Some vehicles use a Certificate of Fitness rather than a Warrant of Fitness, and RUC obligations depend on the vehicle and fuel or power type. The future result will label only the fields that apply or are returned.
Will a clear result prove the vehicle is safe to buy?
No. Status data cannot replace checking the physical plate and VIN, inspecting the vehicle, confirming the seller and ownership details, checking security interests and obtaining mechanical advice.
Why might vehicle information be unavailable or delayed?
A plate can be mistyped, changed or unavailable, and provider records can have coverage, refresh or access limits. Missing data must never be interpreted as current, valid or passed.
