Room temperature chooses the technology before wattage does
A compressor model usually performs efficiently in a warm room. In a cold garage or unheated bedroom, coil temperature can limit extraction and trigger defrosting.
A desiccant unit often keeps removing moisture in cooler air and adds more warmth, but typically draws more electricity. The useful question is cost per litre removed in that room.
The label litre rating is a test, not your laundry room
Manufacturers quote extraction under stated temperature and humidity conditions. A “20 litre” compressor unit may collect far less on a cool New Zealand winter day.
Compare test conditions, tank size, humidistat control and low-temperature performance. A cheaper high rating is no bargain if the machine mostly idles or defrosts where it will live.

Run to a humidity target, not forever
A humidistat around a healthy target lets the unit stop when the job is done. Close windows and doors in the treated area; otherwise the machine tries to dry a moving supply of outdoor air.
Fix leaks, extraction and drainage first. A dehumidifier manages moisture but should not become permanent camouflage for a building defect.
