Moisture control

How much does a dehumidifier cost to run in NZ?

Dehumidifier cost depends on the model, wattage and how often the compressor or desiccant element is active. Adjust the duty cycle for your room and local conditions, especially during a damp New Zealand winter.

Your inputs

Start with a typical preset
Presets are estimates. You can override the inputs below.

Duty cycle matters

A compressor may cycle on and off after humidity falls. Adjust the duty cycle to reflect the room, target humidity and weather.

Estimate only: Electricity results estimate variable energy cost from the wattage, use and per-kWh rate entered. They exclude fixed daily charges and can differ from a measured bill because appliance demand and tariffs vary.

What your result means

The result estimates electricity used during the selected operating time. It does not measure litres of water removed or guarantee that a room will reach a particular humidity.

How the calculation works

Rated watts are converted to kilowatts and multiplied by hours, duty cycle and the entered electricity rate. The duty cycle represents the share of the selected time that the main system is actively drawing its modelled power.

Example calculation

A 500 W dehumidifier used for eight hours at a 75% duty cycle consumes an estimated 3 kWh. At 34 cents per kWh, that is about $1.02 for the day.

What affects the result?

  • Compressor models commonly use less power than desiccant models.
  • The duty cycle estimates active operation during the selected hours.
  • Temperature and target humidity can change both cycling and moisture removal.
  • Seasonal cost is best understood alongside ventilation and moisture sources.

Ways to use less energy

  • Use the humidistat rather than running continuously.
  • Keep doors and windows appropriate to the ventilation strategy.
  • Clean filters and drain paths regularly.

Common questions

Why does dehumidifier duty cycle matter?

Many models cycle after reaching target humidity. The percentage estimates how much of the selected time the main system is active.

Is a desiccant model always more expensive?

Not in every situation. Wattage, operating time, temperature, moisture removal and model performance all affect the useful result.

Does the estimate show moisture removed?

No. It estimates electricity consumption only. Water extraction depends on humidity, temperature, airflow, capacity and the specific model.

What rate should I enter?

Use the variable cents-per-kWh rate that applies when the appliance runs. Time-of-use plans may require separate peak and off-peak scenarios.
