Inbound Travel Insurance NZ: Visitor Checklist
Understand travel insurance to New Zealand for overseas visitors, including inbound eligibility, medical costs, activities, visas and policy-duration checks.
General information only, not personal insurance advice or a statement that a claim will be paid. Product terms, premiums and eligibility can change; use the current policy wording and a written insurer decision. Calculator figures do not separately calculate GST; check the total shown on each live quote.
Key points
The visitor cover checklist
Travel insurance to New Zealand is an inbound product for people who normally live overseas; it is different from cover sold to NZ residents going abroad.
Eligibility can depend on residence, age, visa, access to public healthcare and the length or purpose of the visit.
Visitors should check emergency medical, evacuation, cancellation, baggage, liability and planned activities.
The KiwiTools cost calculator models New Zealand residents travelling away and should not be used as an inbound quote.

Start with an actual inbound product, not an NZ resident policy
Southern Cross currently sells Visiting New Zealand cover for eligible international visitors, while Cover-More advertises an Inbound plan for non-New Zealand residents travelling here. These are examples, not a complete list or recommendation, and availability can change.
Check the residence, age, arrival, departure and journey definitions before comparing benefits. A working holiday, study period or paid job can require different eligibility from an ordinary holiday, so disclose the real purpose of the stay.
Do not assume every visitor receives free healthcare
Eligibility for publicly funded services depends on New Zealand rules and the visitor’s circumstances. Even when some treatment is available, ambulance, dental, private treatment, evacuation or repatriation can create costs.
Choose medical and assistance limits based on the full visit and possible side trips. Confirm whether cover continues during travel to Australia, Pacific islands or another country.
ACC is not complete visitor insurance
ACC may assist with qualifying accidental injuries in New Zealand, but it does not replace travel insurance. Illness, cancellation, luggage, liability, evacuation and many journey costs sit outside accident compensation.
An inbound policy should be evaluated as a complete contract, not only as a medical top-up. Check excesses and which provider must be contacted during an emergency.
Give each insurer the same visitor brief
Record the traveller’s normal country of residence, age, visa, arrival and departure dates, work or study plans, side trips, existing medical conditions and every important activity. Use that same brief for each quote so price differences are meaningful.
For example, a 68-year-old visitor with $6,000 of non-refundable bookings should quote that same age, residence, visa, full trip and $6,000 cancellation need with each provider. Cover-More currently publishes an inbound age limit of 69 or younger and a $1 million overseas medical-expense limit; Southern Cross publishes eligibility up to age 75. Those figures show why the exact product matters, not which one is automatically better.
Check start dates, extensions, side trips and return travel
A policy may need to be bought before arrival, or it may impose a stand-down when purchased after travel starts. Extensions can have deadlines and may require the traveller to remain eligible and claim-free, so never assume they are automatic.
Request an inbound quote directly because the KiwiTools outbound calculator is not valid for this trip. Confirm the end point too: departure from New Zealand, return to the traveller’s home country and any Australia or Pacific stopovers may be treated differently. Insurance and visa requirements remain separate.
Frequently asked questions
Can a visitor buy travel insurance after arriving in New Zealand?
Some products may allow this and others may not. Waiting periods, known events and eligibility conditions can apply, so ask the inbound insurer directly.
Does ACC mean visitors do not need insurance?
No. ACC addresses qualifying accidental injuries, not ordinary illness, cancellation, baggage, evacuation, liability or every treatment cost.
Can the NZ travel insurance calculator estimate inbound cover?
No. It models New Zealand residents travelling away. Inbound visitors need a specific quote based on their residence, visa, age and journey.
Does inbound insurance cover working holidays?
Some inbound products may, subject to occupation, visa and activity rules. Confirm paid work and every planned activity before purchase.
