Mangatepopo Campsite

From 1 May to late October the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is considered a difficult, expert-level hike. The track can be covered with snow and very icy in sections. Temperatures are frequently below freezing, and avalanches may occur. Alpine skills and equipment, as well as warm and waterproof clothing, are essential to hike the track. We are undertaking important maintenance. You can expect to see contractors working on the track on some days and helicopter flights associated with this work. The Mangatepopo (Ditch) Track is closed as the structures have been damaged by fire and are not safe to use. We are planning to have the track open by 18 December 2026. Do not attempt to use this track until it is reopened. Oturere Hut is currently closed while a new hut is being built. There is no accommodation between Mangatepopo Hut and Waihohonu Hut. This section of the Tongariro Northern Circuit should only be completed by those fit enough to walk 20 km, in one day, over difficult terrain. The new Oturere Hut and campsite are due to reopen on 18 December 2026.
