This large campground is in the Tāwharanui Open Sanctuary. It's situated on the north eastern coast behind the sand dunes and between Phoenix Reef and Comet Rock.
Tāwharanui Campground Native plantings divide this flat, grassed campground into six bays, each with its own character. Marked access points through the dunes take you directly to the beach. Camping here is tent-only. Facilities include a safe drinking water supply from a treated bore with taps around the campground. Each bay has a vault toilet block with two unisex cubicles, and Bay Three includes an accessible cubicle. You may bring your own solar shower, shower tent, and solar shower support, but showers must not be hung from trees. Bookings are essential and can be made up to six months in advance. Your campsite must be kept clean and tidy during your stay and when you leave. There are no bins or rubbish facilities, so all rubbish and recycling must be taken out with you. Dogs, pets, and other animals are not permitted at any time. Fires are strictly prohibited. Getting there From Takatu Road, take the metal access road on the left and continue until you reach the locked wooden gate. Use your booking code to open the gate, then follow the signposts to the campground. Main park gates are open 6am–9pm during daylight savings, and 6am–7pm at other times. Use this location on Google Maps to help find your way there.
