Predator control for part of Tararua Forest Park
We distributed toxic bait pellets containing 1080 by helicopter on 19 May 2026. A caution period is in place for approximately 8 months. Visitors are advised not to take dogs into the area until the caution period has ended. 1080 is deadly to dogs. How to keep dogs safe around 1080 . Essential preparation for Jumbo Hut
Take firestarters The firewood at the hut is often damp, as the storage shed is exposed to rain, especially during severe weather. Wood is also left outside in bags without a chance to dry. Visitors should take firestarters to help light damp firewood. Take a cooker The gas cookers at the hut occasionally stop working, new parts have been ordered. Visitors should take their own cookers in case the hut gas cookers aren't working.
