Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
A short and easy walking track for all fitness levels. The track wanders briefly through beech and podocarp forest and crosses a wooden bridge before arriving at a swing bridge for the best views of these stunningly clear glacial blue waters that flow from the mountains into the Makarora River. Access to the water’s edge is possible. Return via the same track. This track is also the best starting point for the Gillespie Pass Circuit when the Makarora river is in high flow.
Due to high amounts of sandflies , insect repellent is recommended. Limited number of people are allowed on each bridge at any one time. Read the signs and wait for your turn if necessary. Toilets are available at the carpark.
From Wānaka, drive north on the Haast Highway (SH6) to Makarora township. Continue along the highway for about 12 km. The track starts from the Blue Pools carpark off SH6, opposite Cameron Flat campsite. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
