Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
From Hunua Falls, it's a short walk to the Cossey Gorge and Massey Track junction. Take a right to head South on the Massey Track and enjoy an undulating bush walk with a wholesome mix of stairs and uphill single track to reach a high point of 325m, before the Wairoa-Cossey track junction appears. Turn right here to continue South towards the Wairoa Dam where t he track continues to offer a mix of well-formed paths and rugged terrain, with glimpses of the dam and surrounding forest. The track is moderately challenging, with some steep sections and stream crossings. As you approach the southern end of the Wairoa Dam there is a fork, turn left here to continue down to the waters edge where there is a short road section along the shore of the Dam. From here continue on to join the Wairoa Loop Track clockwise as it climbs to a lookout platform after 1.5km. The lookout provides magnificent views of the Wairoa Reserve. Shortly after, the track joins Repeater Road, follow this until the left turn onto Challenge Track, and the campsite is 100m up on the left. An alternate route is available by continuing to the right of the fork, which takes you along the Suspension Bridge Track down to Wairoa Loop Track Carpark. From the information board, walk up the right-hand side of the Wairoa Loop Track . Continue until the track meets Repeater Road, then turn right and follow it for 200 m east. Turn left onto Challenge Track, and the campsite is 100 m up on the left. The timings and distance provided for this track is one way, so arrange for a pickup at the other end, or double the time estimate and return via same route for a long day walk.
