Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
Park at the Matiri roadend carpark and cross the West Branch (this was bridged in 2020 so allows all weather access). Follow the road alongside the river before entering the forest and climbing the face of a slip brought down by an ancient earthquake. The track levels out and soon reaches Lake Matiri Hut overlooking the tranquil Lake Matiri. The area below the hut has been cleared, offering excellent views north across the lake and up the Matiri Valley. From the hut, you can retrace your steps or extend your journey. Options include continuing north along the lake to climb to the Thousand Acres Plateau (Matiri Range) and Poor Pete’s Hut , or following the valley floor to McConchies Hut .
