Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
The upper Makarora Valley opens into long grassy flats leading to an impressive basin beneath Mount Brewster. Cross the river at Davis Flat to reach the steep climb beside Stewart Falls, or use the high river track on the true left of the road bridge. Above the falls, the track sidles above the gorge and can be slippery when wet. It then traverses and descends a large unstable slip to a small river flat. Continue through small open flats, forest, and slips to the main valley flat. From here the route is unmarked to the four-bunk Makarora Hut, about 50 minutes away on the true left at the northern end of the flat near the bush edge. A three-hour return trip from the hut to the basin at the head of the valley is recommended. This unmarked route is often partly covered in ice from Mount Brewster’s upper slopes. Follow the river, bypassing two gorges: take the true right around the first, and the true left around the second.
Davis Flat car park is in danger of being washed out during heavy rain. Do not leave your vehicle overnight during heavy rain forecast. This area has terrain that can produce avalanches that cross the track, usually from May into November. Check out the alerts tab for information from the NZ Avalanche Advisory.
