Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
The Maungaroa Lookout Track begins midway down Glen Esk Road, where you'll find parking and the trailhead. The track starts with a very steep ascent through lush native bush, featuring a diverse array of flora and fauna. As you make your way up, you'll be surrounded by towering kauri, nikau palms, and vibrant ferns. Along the way, you'll encounter several scenic spots perfect for a short break and photos. As you approach the summit, the vegetation opens up, providing glimpses of the stunning vistas that await. The final ascent is a bit steep, but the effort is well worth it. Upon reaching the lookout, you'll be greeted with breathtaking views of Piha Beach, Lion Rock, and the rugged coastline stretching into the distance. Take some time to soak in the panoramic views. The return journey follows the same path, offering a different perspective of the beautiful surroundings.

The track begins from a small carpark just before the end of Glenesk Rd. If the carpark is full, an overflow carpark exists slightly further up the road at Piha Mill Camp. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
