Basic grassed campground situated between dune wetlands and coastal cliffs at Karekare in the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park.
Tunnel Point Campground Camping here is tent-only. There is no vehicle access. A small cooking shelter and one composting toilet are provided. Roof water is available but must be boiled for at least three minutes before use. Please conserve water, as supply is limited. Bookings are essential and can be made up to six months in advance. Please keep your campsite clean and tidy during your stay and when you leave. There are no bins or rubbish facilities, so all rubbish and recycling must be taken out with you. Dogs, pets, and other animals are not permitted at any time. Fires are strictly prohibited. Getting there: From Whatipū : Walk the Gibbons and Muir tracks to Pararaha Valley Campground. From there, take the track to the coast and follow the signposted route through the dunes to Tunnel Point. The main park gates are open 6am–9pm during daylight savings, and 6am–7pm at other times. Walk duration: approx. 3.5 hours. From Karekare : Start at the Karekare Beach car park. Head south, cross the bridge to Pōhutukawa Glade, and continue to the beach. Walk around Karekare Point and along the beach at low to mid-tide only. Follow the beach south, head inland through the dunes, and follow the orange markers to Tunnel Point Campground. Walk duration: approx. 1 hour.
