Explore the area
Explore the track route and surrounding area before you set out.
From the White Horse Hill Campground parking the track is well sign posted. The track quickly gains elevation to provide views of Aoraki, Hooker Glacier, Hooker Lake and Mueller Lake. It is a steep track consisting mostly of stairs (2000+ stairs and 600m elevation gain), taking approximately 3.5 hours return. While this track is designated "Easy" that is due to the track surface and markings, and it does not relate to the fitness required. Read the description and reviews to get a better picture to see if this is the right track for you. To turn this into an overnight trip you can continue from the Sealy Tarns track onto the Mueller Hut Route and stay in Mueller Hut.
You may not fly a drone anywhere in the National Park without a concession from DOC. There are aircraft frequently operating in this area, so it is extremely important to follow this rule for their safety. The area is very exposed and can be prone to sudden changes in weather. There is no shade or shelter on the track and no water, it is recommended bring additional warm and waterproof layers and extra water to accommodate for this. Keas often hang out in this area. Keep a close eye on your gear and please do not feed the keas. In winter months the track can by icy with an avalanche risk. If you are unsure about the conditions you can call into the DOC Visitor Centre located in the village for up to date information.
You can camp near the carpark itself at White Horse Hill Campground . Fees are to be paid to DOC. If you would like to make this trip into an overnight trip you can continue from the Sealy Tarns track onto the Mueller Hut Route and stay in Mueller Hut . Bookings for this hut are essential. This is even more strenuous of a walk and in winter, requires mountaineering skills and equipment. Watch the video to learn more.
At Lake Pukaki turn onto SH80/Mt Cook Rd. Just before the village turn right onto Hooker Valley Rd. Use this location in Google Maps to find your way there.
