What is NZTA Motochek?
Motochek is an NZTA service that lets registered users request Motor Vehicle Register information electronically. NZTA describes it as suitable for accessing information frequently or in bulk. It is not the same as CarJam, MotorWeb or another consumer-facing vehicle-report website.
The official spelling is Motochek. Searches for MotoCheck NZ commonly refer to the same NZTA service, but users should check the nzta.govt.nz domain before entering account or payment details.
Who can register for Motochek?
A person or organisation must apply and register before using Motochek. NZTA assigns the account to a standard, authorised or enforcement access group. Standard access is the general level; authorised access requires an approved purpose, while enforcement access is for people with enforcement powers under an enactment.
Registration does not automatically provide unrestricted personal information. The Motor Vehicle Register contains protected information, and the names and addresses of individuals are available only where the law, authorisation and opt-out rules permit disclosure.

What Motochek queries are available?
NZTA lists queries for current details, registered person as at a date, registered-person history, confirmation of a registered person, latest RUC licence, RUC licence history, vehicle details and vehicle usage history. The options displayed to a user depend on the account's access level.
Queries can use a plate number or VIN. NZTA documents immediate and overnight screen requests for up to six vehicles, plus overnight data-format transactions for larger batches. An immediate query is processed on screen, while overnight results are retrieved later.
Motochek fees and account charges
Motochek queries are chargeable under the applicable regulations, and NZTA maintains a dedicated fee schedule. Charges can vary by query and delivery format. Because statutory fees can change, this guide does not copy a fee table that could become misleading.
Before submitting a query, check the current Motochek fees page and the terms applying to the account. Organisations should also confirm billing, permitted users, data handling and whether immediate or overnight processing suits the intended workflow.
Is Motochek useful for a private car buyer?
Motochek is generally not the simplest starting point for a person checking one used car. NZTA separately offers a free service to confirm whether supplied details match the current registered person, and a free immediate stolen-vehicle check. Consumer vehicle-report providers can package other history information for casual buyers.
Remember that the registered person is not necessarily the legal owner. A buyer should also check for security interests through PPSR, compare the plate and VIN, inspect the vehicle and seller documentation, and arrange a mechanical inspection.
Privacy and responsible use
Motochek access is governed by its terms, privacy requirements and the permitted purpose for which information is released. Account holders should limit access to permitted users, protect downloaded information and request correction if account information is inaccurate.
KiwiTools cannot register a user, run a Motochek query or determine whether an applicant qualifies for authorised access. Applications, fee questions, corrections and access decisions must go through NZTA.
